Making Memories in the Middle East

Today, I went to the Western Wall. What a remarkable place. At first, I couldn't believe my eyes! I was looking at a wall that had existed for 2000 years, a wall that had seen everything from the Crusaders to the Jews returning from the horrors of the Holocaust. The concept is mind-blowing.

I feel like there was SO much to see at the wall, so much to watch and try to understand. In reality, the place is an ordinary square filled with stone, people, and plastic chairs. However, it is the details and the history that make this place forever memorable. You see, some of those people carry Torah's and some carry guns. Some have their foreheads pressed against the wall as thoughtful tears stream down their cheeks. The stone walls are far from ordinary. This wall has lasted since the time when it circled the temple at Jerusalem, the temples of Solomon and Herod. It is all that is left of the temple of the Jews, and it's meaning to them is deep and powerful.

Today, I saw combat boots walk over the stones that millions consider 'holy ground'. I saw bullet cases and delicately folded paper prayers in the same five minutes.

What an extraordinary place. I hope it can see peace one day. It's seen enough of war.
